DRAMA
Fluorescent
A gay 19-year-old, suffocating in suburban listlessness, finds his identity dangerously blurred when he falls for a magnetic, self-destructive girl and is pulled into her violent, chaotic past.
Fluorescent captures the specific, pre-millennial anxiety of 1999 New Jersey, where 19-year-old Eric feels more like a ghost than a person . His life is a dull hum of fluorescent lights at his retail job until Jess walks in for an interview. She's a force of nature, and their immediate, intense connection confuses Eric, who has always identified as gay. He quickly falls into her world, forming a tight, dysfunctional bond with her and her manic-but-loyal best friend, Terri.
This new life is thrilling, but Jess is hiding a dark secret: a violent ex named Andre who believes she still belongs to him. As Eric gets pulled deeper, he begins to shed his old self, risking his job, his family, and his safety to protect her. The play barrels toward a dangerous confrontation where Eric must decide just how far he's willing to go for this all-consuming, and possibly toxic, connection.
